Salok Sheikh Farid, Salok 110 (Mehl 5) — the heart held by the One stays steady while the world whirls

ਮਃ ੫ ॥
mehlaa 5.
Fifth Mehl:
ਫਰੀਦਾ ਦੁਨੀ ਵਜਾਈ ਵਜਦੀ ਤੂੰ ਭੀ ਵਜਹਿ ਨਾਲਿ ॥
fareedaa dunee vajaa-ee vajdee tooN bhee vajeh naal.
Fareed, the world dances as it dances, and you dance with it as well.
ਸੋਈ ਜੀਉ ਨ ਵਜਦਾ ਜਿਸੁ ਅਲਹੁ ਕਰਦਾ ਸਾਰ ॥੧੧੦॥
so-ee jee-o na vajdaa jis alhu kardaa saar. ||110||
That soul alone does not dance with it, who is under the care of the Lord God. ||110||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Farid says: the world dances to its own tune, and you dance along with it.

Only the soul that Allah takes care of does not dance along.

The world dances to its tune; the soul in the One's care stays still.
The deeper layer

The whole world is swept along by its own music, and only the one in the One's care stands still.

This salok is by Guru Arjan, written in Farid's name. Dunee vajaa-ee vajdee: the world plays as it is played, like a drum or a dancer moving to someone else's beat. Too(n) bhee vajeh naal: and you move with it.

So-ee jee-o na vajdaa: that soul does not move along, jis alhu kardaa saar, whom Allah, the One, looks after. Think of a crowd rushing one way down a street, and one person standing calm in the middle, held by a friend's hand.

A Question to Sit With

When does it feel like the world is pulling you along with it?
