It is so difficult to be like the fakeers - the Holy Saints; it is only achieved by perfect karma. ||111||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Farid says: the heart is dyed in the color of this world, but the world is of no use to it at all.

To live like the fakeers, the holy ones, is very hard. It comes only by perfect karma.

The heart clings to the world, but the world cannot help it.
The deeper layer

The heart clings to the world, and the world gives it nothing it can keep.

This salok is by Guru Arjan, written in Farid's name. Dil rataa is dunee si-o: the heart is soaked in this world. Dunee na kitai kamm: the world is no use to it in the end.

Misal fakeeraa(n) gaakh-rhee: the way of the fakeers is hard. A fakeer is a Sufi holy person who owns little and lives for the One. Poor karamm: perfect karma. In Gurbani, karam often also means grace, the gift of the One.

A Question to Sit With

What does your heart hold on to that cannot hold you back?
