Salok Sheikh Farid, Salok 115 — let patience be your bow and your aim

ਸਬਰ ਮੰਝ ਕਮਾਣ ਏ ਸਬਰੁ ਕਾ ਨੀਹਣੋ ॥
sabar manjh kamaan ay sabar kaa neehno.
Within yourself, make patience the bow, and make patience the bowstring.
ਸਬਰ ਸੰਦਾ ਬਾਣੁ ਖਾਲਕੁ ਖਤਾ ਨ ਕਰੀ ॥੧੧੫॥
sabar sandaa baan khaalak khataa na karee. ||115||
Make patience the arrow, the Creator will not let you miss the target. ||115||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Inside yourself, make patience your bow, and make patience your bowstring.

Make patience your arrow, and the Creator will not let you miss.

Make patience your bow and arrow — the Creator will not let you miss.
The deeper layer

With patience as bow, string and arrow, the Creator makes sure you hit the mark.

Sabar means patience: staying steady and calm while you wait. Kamaan is the bow, neehno the bowstring, baan the arrow. Every part of the archer's gear is made of patience.

Khaalak khataa na karee: the Creator will not let you miss. Think of an archer who rushes and the arrow flies wide, and an archer who breathes, waits and lets go at the right moment.

A Question to Sit With

When has waiting calmly helped you get something right?
