Savaiye Sri Mukhbak (Mehl 5), Verse 3 — One root, every branch — everywhere yet free
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
You set up all the worlds from within Yourself and spread them out. You fill everything, and still You stay apart.
O One, Your good qualities have no end or limit; every living being is Yours. You alone are the Giver of all, the Unseen One.
You Yourself hold up the universe and show Your power. You have no color, no mark, no face and no beard.
Your devotees stand at Your Door, O One, and they are like You. Nanak, Your servant, says: with only one tongue, how can I describe them?
I give myself to them, again and again and again, forever.
The One fills everything and is still free of it, and has no color or face you could draw.
Sagal bhavan Dhaaray ayk thay(n): all the worlds were set up from the One. Poor rahi-o sarab meh: filling all. Aap hai niraaray: and yet apart. Think of the sun shining into every window without being stuck inside any house.
Baran chihan naahee: no color, no mark. Mukh na masaaray: no face, no beard. The One shows itself through kudrat, the world it makes. The refrain of the first verse returns at the end.
How can something be unseen and still be everywhere? Can you think of an example?
