Phunhay, Verse 23 — medicine works when the One is present

vaidaa sandaa sang ikthaa ho-i-aa.
The physicians meet together in their assembly.
a-ukhad aa-ay raas vich aap khalo-i-aa.
The medicines are effective, when the Lord Himself stands in their midst.
jo jo onaa karam sukaram ho-ay pasri-aa.
Their good deeds and karma become apparent.
harihaaN dookh rog sabh paap tan tay khisri-aa. ||23||
O Lord! Pains, diseases and sins all vanish from their bodies. ||23||

In plain words

The healers gather together.

Their medicines work when the One stands right there among them.

Whatever they do becomes good work, and it spreads far.

O Lord! Pain, sickness and every wrong slip away from the body.

Medicine works when the One stands among the healers.
The deeper layer

Medicine works when the One stands among the healers.

The picture is a gathering of vaidaa, healers or doctors. They bring their a-ukhad, their medicines. The medicines work when the One stands right there among them. Whatever they do then becomes good work, and its good spreads. Pain, sickness and wrongdoing slip away from the body.

Many readers hear the healers as the saints, and the medicine as the Naam from the verse before. Think of a hospital team: skilled doctors, careful nurses, good medicine, and the One in the room too, working through their hands.

This verse closes the Phunhay, so the whole set ends with healing.

A Question to Sit With

When has being together with others brought healing or comfort?
