Chaubolay, Verse 1 — love cannot be bought at any price
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.
O Samman, if this love could be bought with money —
think of Raavan the king. He was not poor, yet he could not buy it, even though he offered his own head to Shiva.
This love cannot be bought, even by the richest king.
The Chaubolay are short verses spoken to friends by name; here the friend is Samman. The example is Raavan (Ravana), the mighty king of the old stories. He had great wealth, and the legend says he offered his own head to Shiva in worship. Even so, he could not buy this love.
What is something precious to you that no amount of money could buy?
