Chaubolay, Verse 7 — robbed by forgetting the Merciful One

ਘਬੁ ਦਬੁ ਜਬ ਜਾਰੀਐ ਬਿਛੁਰਤ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਬਿਹਾਲ ॥
ghab dab jab jaaree-ai bichhurat paraym bihaal.
When someone's home and property are burnt, because of his attachment to them, he suffers in the sorrow of separation.
ਮੂਸਨ ਤਬ ਹੀ ਮੂਸੀਐ ਬਿਸਰਤ ਪੁਰਖ ਦਇਆਲ ॥੭॥
moosan tab hee moosee-ai bisrat purakh da-i-aal. ||7||
O Musan, when mortals forget the Merciful Lord God, then they are truly plundered. ||7||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When someone's home and belongings burn, they are miserable, torn away from the things they loved.

O Musan, a person is robbed in the same way when they forget the kind and Merciful One.

Forgetting the Merciful One is the loss that robs you most.
The deeper layer

Forgetting the Merciful One is a loss as painful as losing your home.

Ghab dab jab jaaree-ai: when the household and its goods burn. Bichhurat paraym bihaal: a person is miserable, separated from what they loved. Bisrat purakh da-i-aal: forgetting the Merciful One is when a person is robbed the same way.

A Question to Sit With

What matters more to you than the things that can be lost?
