Salok Bhagat Kabir, Salok 2 — blessed be the class that remembers

ਕਬੀਰ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਾਤਿ ਕਉ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਹਸਨੇਹਾਰੁ ॥
kabeer mayree jaat ka-o sabh ko hasnayhaar.
Kabir, everyone laughs at my social class.
ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਇਸ ਜਾਤਿ ਕਉ ਜਿਹ ਜਪਿਓ ਸਿਰਜਨਹਾਰੁ ॥੨॥
balihaaree is jaat ka-o jih japi-o sirjanhaar. ||2||
I am a sacrifice to this social class, in which I chant and meditate on the Creator. ||2||

In plain words

Kabir says: everyone laughs at the social class I was born into.

I give myself to this class, for in it I have remembered the Creator.

Where you come from does not decide your worth; remembering the One does.
The deeper layer

Nearness to the Creator, and never the family you are born into, is what makes a life honorable.

Kabir was a weaver, born into a group that others looked down on, and jaat means social class or caste. People laughed at it. Kabir blesses it, because in it he remembered the sirjanhaar, the Creator. Every person has the same dignity; worth is found in the turning of the heart.

A Question to Sit With

Has anyone ever looked down on you for something that turned out to be a gift?
