Savaiye in Praise of Guru Amar Das, Verse 6 — joy and sorrow met as one

ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵਹਿ ਦੇਵ ਤੇਤੀਸ ਅਰੁ ਸਾਧਿਕ ਸਿਧ ਨਰ ਨਾਮਿ ਖੰਡ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੰਡ ਧਾਰੇ ॥

naam Dhi-aavahi dayv taytees ar saaDhik siDh nar naam khand barahmand Dhaaray.

The thirty-one million gods meditate on the Naam, along with the Siddhas and seekers; the Naam supports solar systems and galaxies.

ਜਹ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਧਿਓ ਹਰਖੁ ਸੋਗੁ ਸਮ ਕਰਿ ਸਹਾਰੇ ॥

jah naam samaaDhi-o harakh sog sam kar sahaaray.

One who meditates on the Naam in Samaadhi, endures sorrow and joy as one and the same.

ਨਾਮੁ ਸਿਰੋਮਣਿ ਸਰਬ ਮੈ ਭਗਤ ਰਹੇ ਲਿਵ ਧਾਰਿ ॥

naam siroman sarab mai bhagat rahay liv Dhaar.

The Naam is the most sublime of all; the devotees remain lovingly attuned to it.

ਸੋਈ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਅਮਰ ਗੁਰ ਤੁਸਿ ਦੀਓ ਕਰਤਾਰਿ ॥੬॥

so-ee naam padaarath amar gur tus dee-o kartaar. ||6||

Guru Amar Daas was blessed with the treasure of the Naam, by the Creator Lord, in His Pleasure. ||6||

The three hundred thirty million gods meditate on the Naam, and so do the Siddhas, the seekers and people. The Naam holds up every world and galaxy.

Whoever is joined to the Naam in deep stillness meets joy and sorrow as the same, and bears them both.

The Naam is the crown above everything. The devotees stay lovingly tuned to it.

The Creator, pleased, gave that treasure of the Naam to Guru Amar Das.

Rooted in the Naam, joy and sorrow are met with the same steady heart.

The same Naam holds up every world and galaxy, khand barahmand Dhaaray. It is the crown, siroman, above everything.

Tus dee-o kartaar: the Creator, pleased, gave it. The Naam came to Guru Amar Das as a gift.
