Salok Vaaraan Te Vadheek (Mehl 1), Salok 13 — Struck by the Arrow of Love

naanak lagee tur marai jeevan naahee taan.
O Nanak, one who is struck by the Lord dies instantaneously; the power to live is lost.
chotai saytee jo marai lagee saa parvaan.
If someone dies by such a stroke, then he is accepted.
jis no laa-ay tis lagai lagee taa parvaan.
He alone is struck, who is struck by the Lord; after such a stroke, he is approved.
piram paikaam na niklai laa-i-aa tin sujaan. ||13||
The arrow of love, shot by the All-knowing Lord, cannot be pulled out. ||13||

In plain words

Nanak says: whoever is struck by the One's arrow falls at once, dying to the old life; no strength is left to live as before.

Whoever dies by such a blow — that blow is accepted.

Only the one the One strikes is struck; then that stroke is accepted.

The arrow of love, shot by the All-knowing One, can never be pulled out.

When the arrow of the One's love strikes, the old self falls away and the heart is accepted.
The deeper layer

When love for the One strikes, the old self falls away, and that is a blessing.

Naanak lagee tur marai: whoever is struck dies at once. This is the death of the ego-self, the old way of living for oneself, overcome by love. Chotai saytee jo marai lagee saa parvaan: whoever dies by that blow is accepted.

Jis no laa-ay tis lagai: the arrow strikes only the one the One aims it at. Piram paikaam na niklai: the arrow of love, shot by the All-knowing, sujaan, never comes out.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever loved something or someone so much that it changed who you are, and how?
