Salok Vaaraan Te Vadheek (Mehl 5), Salok 137 — peace in accepting the One's will

karay so changa maan duyee ganat laahi.
Whatever God does, accept that as good; leave behind all other judgements.
apnee nadar nihaal aapay laihu laa-ay.
He shall cast His Glance of Grace, and attach you to Himself.
jan dayh matee updays vichahu bharam jaa-ay.
Instruct yourself with the Teachings, and doubt will depart from within.
jo Dhur likhi-aa laykh so-ee sabh kamaa-ay.
Everyone does that which is pre-ordained by destiny.
sabh kachh tis dai vas doojee naahi jaa-ay.
Everything is under His control; there is no other place at all.
naanak sukh anad bha-ay parabh kee man rajaa-ay. ||7||
Nanak is in peace and bliss, accepting the Will of God. ||7||

In plain words

Whatever the One does, accept it as good, and put down every other way of weighing things.

With Your glance of grace, bless me, and join me to Yourself.

Give Your servant wisdom and teaching, so that doubt leaves from inside.

Everyone does what was written for them from the start.

Everything is in the One's hands; there is no other place to go.

Nanak says: accepting the One's will, I am in peace and joy.

*Peace comes from accepting whatever the One does as good.*
The deeper layer

Peace comes from meeting whatever life brings with trust.

karay so changa maan — whatever the One does, accept it as good. duyee ganat laahi — drop the endless weighing of this against that. Think of a kid who argues about every call in a game. They never get to enjoy playing. Letting go of the arguing brings back the fun.

Then comes a prayer: for nadar, the glance of grace that joins us to the One, and for wisdom and teaching, so doubt leaves. Everyone does what was written for them. Everything is in the One's hands.

naanak sukh anad bha-ay — Nanak is in peace and joy, accepting the One's will. It is resting in the flow of life.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you cannot change that would feel lighter if you accepted it?
