Salok Vaaraan Te Vadheek (Mehl 5), Salok 141 — sweet words that lead you astray

ਖੁਭੜੀ ਕੁਥਾਇ ਮਿਠੀ ਗਲਣਿ ਕੁਮੰਤ੍ਰੀਆ ॥
khubh-rhee kuthaa-ay mithee galan kumantaree-aa.
I am stuck in an evil place, trusting the sweet words of an evil advisor.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੇਈ ਉਬਰੇ ਜਿਨਾ ਭਾਗੁ ਮਥਾਹਿ ॥੧੧॥
naanak say-ee ubray jinaa bhaag mathaahi. ||11||
O Nanak, they alone are saved, who have such good destiny inscribed upon their foreheads. ||11||

In plain words

I am stuck in a bad place, trusting the sweet words of a bad advisor.

Nanak says: only those are saved who have good fortune written on their foreheads.

*Sweet advice is not always true advice; learn to tell them apart.*
The deeper layer

Sweet words from a bad advisor can lead a person into a bad place.

Khubhrhee kuthaa-ay: stuck in a bad place. Mithee galan kumantaree-aa: the sweet talk of a bad advisor. Say-ee ubray: only they are saved, jinaa bhaag mathaahi, who have good fortune written on their foreheads.

A Question to Sit With

How do you tell the difference between a flatterer and a true friend?
