ਮ੍ਰਿਗ ਤਿਸਨਾ ਪੇਖਿ ਭੁਲਣੇ ਵੁਠੇ ਨਗਰ ਗੰਧ੍ਰਬ ॥
marig tisnaa paykh bhulnay vuthay nagar ganDharab.
Seeing the mirage, the optical illusion, the people are confused and deluded.
ਜਿਨੀ ਸਚੁ ਅਰਾਧਿਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਫਬ ॥੧੪॥
jinee sach araaDhi-aa naanak man tan fab. ||14||
Those who worship and adore the True Lord, O Nanak, their minds and bodies are beautiful. ||14||

In plain words

Seeing a mirage, people are fooled, like those who think they see a city floating in the sky.

Nanak says: those who worship the True One are beautiful in mind and body.

*Much of what looks like it will satisfy you is only a mirage.*
The deeper layer

The world shows us mirages; loving the True One makes a person beautiful.

marig tisnaa — the deer's thirst, an old name for a mirage. A thirsty deer sees shining water in the desert and runs to it. There is only hot sand. nagar ganDharab is a phantom city, a town that seems to float on the horizon but is not there.

People chase such things and get fooled. Think of a pop-up ad that says "You won!" It looks great until you click.

jinee sach araaDhi-aa — those who love sach, Truth. man tan fab — their mind and body become beautiful. The salok sets chasing what fades beside resting in what is true.

A Question to Sit With

What is something that looked amazing from far away but disappointed up close?
