Salok Vaaraan Te Vadheek (Mehl 3), Salok 38 — What Is Written, and the Grace to See

ਮਾਥੈ ਜੋ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਸੁ ਮੇਟਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
maathai jo Dhur likhi-aa so mayt na sakai ko-ay.
No one can erase that primal destiny written upon one's forehead.
naanak jo likhi-aa so varatdaa so boojhai jis no nadar ho-ay. ||5||
O Nanak, whatever is written there, comes to pass. He alone understands, who is blessed by God's Grace. ||5||

In plain words

No one can erase the destiny written on the forehead from the very start.

Nanak says: whatever is written there comes to pass; only the one blessed with the One's glance of grace understands it.

What is written comes to pass, and the One's grace is what lets us understand it.
The deeper layer

What is written from the start comes to pass, and grace is what lets a person understand it.

Maathai jo Dhur likhi-aa: what is written on the forehead from the start. People in India spoke of destiny as writing on the forehead. Mayt na sakai ko-ay: no one can erase it. Jo likhi-aa so vartadaa: whatever is written plays out.

So boojhai jis no nadar ho-ay: only the one who receives nadar, the kind glance of grace, understands it. Grace is a gift, received, never earned.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you cannot change, and what would it mean to understand it?
