Salok Vaaraan Te Vadheek (Mehl 3), Salok 53 — Washing the Heart Clean
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
The manmukhs — those who follow only their own wants — do not remember the Naam; without the Naam, they cry in pain.
They do not worship the One, the Soul within; how can there be peace in love of "the other"?
Inside them is the dirt of ego; they do not wash it out with the Word.
Nanak says: without the Naam, they die still dirty, and lose the priceless treasure of this human life.
Ego is dirt on the heart, and the Word is the water that washes it out.
Manmukh naam na chaytnee: the self-willed do not remember the Naam, and without it they cry in pain. Doojai ki-o sukh ho-ay: how can peace come from doojai, love of the other, while the One who lives inside, aatmaa raam, is forgotten?
Ha-umai antar mail hai: ego is dirt inside. Sabad na kaadheh Dho-ay: the Word could wash it out, but they do not let it. The last line is sober: a human life is a padaarath, a priceless treasure, and without the Naam it is lost.
What helps you rinse away a bad mood or a selfish moment and come back to your clearer self?
