Salok Vaaraan Te Vadheek (Mehl 3), Salok 54 — what the wise carry inside

manmukh bolay anDhulay tis meh agnee kaa vaas.
The self-willed manmukhs are deaf and blind; they are filled with the fire of desire.
banee surat na bujhnee sabad na karahi pargaas.
They have no intuitive understanding of the Guru's Bani; they are not illumined with the Shabad.
onaa aapnee andar suDh nahee gur bachan na karahi visaas.
They do not know their own inner being, and they have no faith in the Guru's Word.
gi-aanee-aa andar gur sabad hai nit har liv sadaa vigaas.
The Word of the Guru's Shabad is within the being of the spiritually wise ones. They always blossom in His love.
har gi-aanee-aa kee rakh-daa ha-o sad balihaaree taas.
The Lord saves the honor of the spiritually wise ones.I am forever a sacrifice to them.

gurmukh jo har sayvday jan naanak taa kaa daas. ||21||
Servant Nanak is the slave of those Gurmukhs who serve the Lord. ||21||

In plain words

The manmukhs — those who follow only their own wants — are deaf and blind; a fire of wanting lives inside them.

They do not understand the Guru's Bani; the Word does not light them up.

They do not know what is inside themselves, and they do not trust the Guru's Word.

Inside the wise is the Guru's Word; they stay tuned to the One every day, always blossoming.

The One protects the honor of the wise; I would give myself for them, always.

Nanak says: I am the servant of those Gurmukhs who serve the One.

What you carry inside decides what you are able to notice.
The deeper layer

A heart full of the fire of wanting cannot hear the Word; a heart that holds the Word keeps blossoming.

Manmukh means the mind turned toward its own separateness; gurmukh means the mind turned toward the light of the teaching. Being "deaf and blind" here is not about the body but about a heart closed to what is right in front of it. The "fire" is trishna, the restless craving that is never satisfied. Vigaas — blossoming — is the natural state of a mind that rests in love.

A Question to Sit With

When has wanting something so badly made you miss something wonderful right in front of you?
