Salok Vaaraan Te Vadheek (Mehl 3), Salok 75 — waking up with a jolt

man aavan jaan na sujh-ee naa sujhai darbaar.
The mortal being does not understand the comings and goings of reincarnation; he does not see the Court of the Lord.
maa-i-aa mohi palayti-aa antar agi-aan gubaar.
He is wrapped up in emotional attachment and Maya, and within his being is the darkness of ignorance.
tab nar sutaa jaagi-aa sir dand lagaa baho bhaar.
The sleeping person wakes, only when he is hit on the head by a heavy club.
gurmukhaaN karaaN upar har chayti-aa say paa-in mokh du-aar.
The Gurmukhs dwell upon the Lord; they find the door of salvation.

O Nanak, they themselves are saved, and all their relatives are carried across as well. ||42||

In plain words

The mind does not understand coming and going, birth and death, and it does not see the court of the One.

Wrapped up in attachment to Maya — the pull of the world — it is dark inside with not-knowing.

The sleeping person wakes up only when a heavy blow lands on the head.

The Gurmukhs — those who turn to the Guru — remember the One, and find the door of freedom.

Nanak says: they themselves are saved, and their whole family is carried across too.

Those who remember the One find the door, and carry their families with them.
The deeper layer

A mind asleep in the world's pull often wakes only with a hard blow; those who remember the One find the door.

Maa-i-aa mohi palayti-aa: wrapped up in Maya, the mind is dark inside, agi-aan gubaar, the darkness of not-knowing. Sir dand lagaa baho bhaar: the sleeper wakes only when a heavy club strikes the head, an old picture of the hard knocks that finally shake a person awake.

Those who turn to the Guru remember the One and find mokh du-aar, the door of freedom. They are saved, and their families are carried across with them.

A Question to Sit With
