Salok Vaaraan Te Vadheek (Mehl 3), Salok 76 — alive in the Word
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Whoever dies in the Word — letting the "I, I" self go — is known as one who has died to the self.
By the Guru's grace, that person is filled and satisfied with the sweet taste of the One.
Through the Guru's Word, they are recognized in the court of the One.
Without the Word, everyone is as good as dead.
The manmukh — the one who follows only their own wants — dies having wasted their life.
Those who do not remember the Naam of the One cry in pain at the end.
Nanak says: whatever the Creator does, that is what happens.
Dying to the ego in the Word fills a person with the sweetness of the One; without the Word, life slips away.
Sabad marai so mu-aa jaapai: whoever dies in the Word is the one who has died in the right way. This is the ego dissolving, not the body. Har ras Dharaapai: by the Guru's grace, that person is filled with the sweet taste of the One and is known in the court of the One.
Bin sabdai mu-aa hai sabh ko-ay: without the Word, everyone is as good as dead, and the self-willed waste their lives and cry at the end. The last line rests everything in the hukam, the flow of existence: what the Creator does, happens.
What would it feel like to be fully present, right now, with nothing to prove?
