Salok Vaaraan Te Vadheek (Mehl 3), Salok 78 — clean all the way through
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
The manmukhs — those who follow only their own wants — young or old, are all the same, like foolish children; inside them is no awareness of the One.
They do all their deeds in ego, and all of it goes before the Judge of Dharma.
The Gurmukhs are good and spotless, made beautiful by the Guru's Word.
Not even the tiniest speck of dirt sticks to them; they walk in the True Guru's Will.
The dirt of the manmukhs does not wash off, even if they wash a hundred times.
Nanak says: the One has joined the Gurmukhs close; they merge into the Guru's embrace.
Being clean inside comes through the Guru's Word; no amount of washing reaches the ego.
Manmukh baalak biraDh samaan: the self-willed, child or old, are alike, because the One is not in their awareness. Their deeds, done in ego, go before Dharam Raa-ay, the Judge of Dharma.
Gurmukh hachhay nirmalay: those who turn to the Guru are good and spotless. Mail patang na lag-ee: not a speck of dirt sticks to them. The self-willed can wash a hundred times and the dirt stays. Outer washing cannot reach ego; the Word can. Gur kai ank samaa-ay: they merge into the Guru's embrace.
What is a habit of the heart you would like to wash clean?
