Salok Vaaraan Te Vadheek (Mehl 3), Salok 99 — make friends with those who face the Guru
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Nanak says: the Master's Hukam, the flow of all things, is at work everywhere. A confused mind wanders around lost, pulled by its restless thoughts.
If you make friends with those who follow only their own mind, my friend, whom can you ask for peace?
Make friends with those who face the Guru, and keep your heart on the True Guru.
Then the root of birth and death is cut away, and you will find peace, my friend.
The friends you keep and where you set your heart shape whether you find peace.
Everything begins in hukam, the flow of existence, which the restless mind, chal chit, keeps missing. Then comes a plain choice: friendship with the manmukh, who follows only their own mind, or with the gurmukh, who faces the Guru. Gurmukh sa-o kar dostee: make friends with those who face the Guru.
Jaman maran kaa mool katee-ai: the root of birth and death is cut — the coming and going driven by ego comes to an end, and peace takes its place.
Which of your friends helps you feel most peaceful and most like yourself?
