Salok Vaaraan Te Vadheek (Mehl 3), Salok 100 — grace teaches the one who lost the way

ਭੁਲਿਆਂ ਆਪਿ ਸਮਝਾਇਸੀ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ॥
bhuli-aaN aap samjhaa-isee jaa ka-o nadar karay.
The Lord Himself instructs those who are misguided, when He casts His Glance of Grace.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰੀ ਬਾਹਰੀ ਕਰਣ ਪਲਾਹ ਕਰੇ ॥੬੭॥
naanak nadree baahree karan palaah karay. ||67||
O Nanak, those who are not blessed by His Glance of Grace, cry and weep and wail. ||67||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The One teaches those who have lost their way, when the One looks on them with kindness.

Nanak says: those without that kind glance cry and weep and wail.

The One's kind glance teaches the one who has lost the way.
The deeper layer

When we lose our way, the One's kind glance is what teaches us.

Bhuli-aa aap samjhaa-isee jaa ka-o nadar karay — the One teaches those who have gone the wrong way, when the One casts nadar, the kind glance of grace. Think of a map app that says "rerouting" when you miss a turn. It shows the way back.

The second line looks at those without that glance. They cry and wail. That ache is what being lost feels like.

This salok closes the long run of verses by Guru Amar Das.

A Question to Sit With

When you have felt lost, what helped you find your way back?
