Verse 5 of 5

You Needn't Fully Understand the One to Give Yourself

ਸਾਚੇ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਅਲਖ ਅਭੇਵ ॥
saachay saahib alakh abhayv.
O True Lord and Master, You are unknowable and mysterious.
ਨਾਨਕ ਲਾਇਆ ਲਾਗਾ ਸੇਵ ॥੪॥੨੦॥
naanak laa-i-aa laagaa sayv. ||4||20||
Nanak is committed to Your service. ||4||20||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

True Master, You are unknowable and mysterious.

Nanak is given over to Your service.

You don't have to fully understand the One to give yourself to it.
The deeper layer

The close holds two truths together: the One is "unknowable and mysterious," beyond comprehension — and yet Nanak is wholly "committed to Your service." You do not need to understand the One fully to give yourself to it. Devotion does not wait on comprehension.

A Question to Sit With

Can you commit to something good even when you can't fully figure it out?
