Verse 3 of 5

Remembrance Tears Down the House Pain Built in You

ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਸੀਤਲੁ ਜਪਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਤੇਰਾ ॥
tan man seetal jap naam tayraa.
My body and mind are cooled and soothed, chanting the Name of the Lord.
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਤ ਢਹੈ ਦੁਖ ਡੇਰਾ ॥੨॥
har har japat dhahai dukh dayraa. ||2||
Meditating on the Lord, Har, Har, the house of pain is demolished. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Chanting the Name, my body and mind are cooled and soothed;

meditating on the One, the whole house of pain is torn down.

Remembrance doesn't just ease pain — it tears down the house pain had built in you.
The deeper layer

The Name "cools and soothes" body and mind, and "the house of pain is demolished" — pain is not just eased but its very dwelling pulled down. A vivid image: suffering had built itself a house in the soul, and remembrance levels it (cf. Shabad 100, Shabad 123).

A Question to Sit With

What 'house' has an old pain built in you that you'd like to see torn down?
