O Nanak, those Gurmukhs who remain merged in the Lord do not wither away; they remain green forever. ||4||1||

In plain words

The months and the seasons keep coming. Watch them, and do your good deeds.

Nanak says: those who turn to the Guru and stay merged in the One never dry up or wither. They stay green forever.

Rooted in the One, you stay green no matter what season the world is in.
The deeper layer

The seasons keep changing, and a heart rooted in the One stays green.

Maahaa rutee aavnaa means the months and the seasons keep coming. So watch, and do good while you have the time.

A gurmukh is someone who faces the Guru's teaching. Guru Nanak says such a person is haray na sookhee: green, never dried up.

Think of a tree beside a river. Summer can be hot and dry, but its roots reach the water, so its leaves stay green. This is the promise at the center of the spring raag. Your inside can stay alive and fresh, whatever the weather of your life outside.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you stay yourself even when everything around you keeps changing?
