Verse 3 of 5

Brought Back Home

ih man lobhee lobh lubhaanaa.
The greedy mind is enticed by greed.
raam bisaar bahur pachhutaanaa.
Forgetting the Lord, it regrets and repents in the end.
bichhurat milaa-ay gur sayv raaNgay.
The separated ones are reunited, when they are inspired to serve the Guru.
har naam dee-o mastak vadbhaagay. ||2||
They are blessed with the Lord's Name - such is the destiny written on their foreheads. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

This greedy mind gets pulled around by wanting more and more.

Forgetting the One, it is sorry again later on.

Those who had drifted apart are brought back together when they are dyed in serving the Guru.

The Naam of the One is given to them, the good fortune written on their foreheads.

Even a mind that drifted off chasing things can be brought back home.
The deeper layer

A greedy mind chases and then regrets, and serving the Guru brings it home.

The verse is honest about how a lobhee (greedy) mind chases and then pachhutaanaa, regrets. The weight of the verse is on return: bichhurat milaa-ay, the separated are reunited when they serve. The Naam written on the forehead is a bright mark of good fortune and grace. The movement is homeward.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever drifted away from something good and then found your way back to it?
