The Medicine for the Fever

ਪਉਣ ਪਾਣੀ ਕੀ ਇਹ ਦੇਹ ਸਰੀਰਾ ॥

This body is built of air and water.
ਹਉਮੈ ਰੋਗੁ ਕਠਿਨ ਤਨਿ ਪੀਰਾ ॥

The body is afflicted with the terribly painful illness of egotism.

The Gurmukh has the Medicine: singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord's Name.

kar kirpaa gur rog gavaa-i-aa. ||3||
Granting His Grace, the Guru has cured the illness. ||3||

In plain words

This body is put together out of air and water.

It suffers from ego, the feeling of being a separate self, a hard and painful sickness.

The one who turns toward the Guru has the medicine: singing the praises of the One's Naam.

Out of kindness, the Guru has taken the sickness away.

Ego is a fever to be healed, and singing the Name is the medicine.
The deeper layer

Ego is a painful sickness, and singing the Naam is the medicine.

Haumai rog, the fever of thinking you are separate, is the hardest pain the body carries. Crucially, it is a sickness, not a crime, and there is a clear cure: raam naam daaroo, the Name as medicine, sung. And the healing is finished by grace (kar kirpaa gur rog gavaa-i-aa). It is a hopeful, doctor-and-patient picture: the trouble is serious, and the cure is sure.

A Question to Sit With

When you feel sick or upset, what is the medicine that helps you feel better?
