In plain words

Four rivers of fire, four strong troubles, flow through the body.

It burns and burns with wanting, and burns with pride.

Those whom the Guru protects are very fortunate; the Guru carries them across.

Nanak says: I, the One's servant, hold the nectar of the One's Naam in my heart.

When wanting and pride burn like fire, the Name is the cool water you carry inside.
The deeper layer

Wanting and pride burn like rivers of fire, and the Guru shelters you and carries you across.

The close names the chaar nadeeaa agnee, the four rivers of fire, the burning of desire and ahankaar (pride), and answers them at once with rescue: gur raakhay, the Guru shelters and carries across. The final image cools everything: ur har amrit dhaaray, the heart holds the nectar of the One close, like carrying cool water through a hot place. The fire is fierce; the shelter and the cool water are stronger.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you cool down inside when a strong feeling is burning hot?
