Sikhism·Raag Basant·Shabad 16
Verse 5 of 5

Heart and Body Turn Green

ਆਪੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥
aapay satgur mayl milaa-ay.
The True Guru Himself unites us in His Union.
ਜਗਜੀਵਨ ਸਿਉ ਆਪਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਏ ॥
jagjeevan si-o aap chit laa-ay.
He Himself links our consciousness to the Lord, the Life of the World.
ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਹਰਿਆ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਏ ॥
man tan hari-aa sahj subhaa-ay.
Thus, our minds and bodies are rejuvenated with intuitive ease.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਹੇ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥੪॥੪॥
naanak naam rahay liv laa-ay. ||4||4||
O Nanak, through the Naam, the Name of the Lord, we remain attuned to the String of His Love. ||4||4||

In plain words

The True Guru Himself brings us into union with the One.

The Guru Himself links our attention to the Life of the World.

Then mind and body turn green, with natural ease.

Nanak says: through the Naam, we stay lovingly tuned to the One.

Turned toward the One, your whole heart and body turn green and come alive.
The deeper layer

Joined to the One, mind and body turn green, the way a garden turns green in spring.

First, aapay satgur mayl milaa-ay — the True Guru joins us to the One. Then our attention is linked to the jagjeevan, the Life of the world.

And then: man tan hari-aa sahj subhaa-ay. Heart and body turn green, with sahj, a natural and easy calm. Think of a plant watered after a dry week. You do not have to force it. It lifts and greens all on its own.

That is the promise of Basant, the spring raag. Naanak naam rahay liv laa-ay — Nanak stays tuned to the Name with love. A person who rests like that grows like a garden in spring. They are fully alive, and at home at last.

A Question to Sit With

What in your life makes you feel like you are growing green and coming alive?
