Sikhism·Raag Basant·Shabad 17
Verse 3 of 5

Peace Comes to Stay

ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰੇ ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
bhagat karay so jan nirmal ho-ay.
That humble being who worships the Lord with devotion becomes immaculate and pure.
ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਖੋਇ ॥
gur sabdee vichahu ha-umai kho-ay.
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, egotism is eradicated from within.
ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਆਪਿ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥
har jee-o aap vasai man aa-ay.
The Dear Lord Himself comes to dwell within the mind,
ਸਦਾ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਸੁਖਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੨॥
sadaa saaNt sukh sahj samaa-ay. ||2||
and the mortal remains immersed in peace, tranquility and intuitive ease. ||2||

In plain words

Whoever loves the One with devotion grows clean and clear, like a window wiped bright.

Through the Guru's Word, the pushy me-first voice goes away from inside.

The dear One comes to live in the mind,

and they stay soaked in peace, calm and easy, always.

When the grabbing quiets, peace has room to move in.
The deeper layer

Loving the One makes the heart clear, and then peace comes to stay.

bhagat karay so jan nirmal ho-ay — whoever lives with love becomes nirmal, clean and clear. This is not a grade or a score. It is like a window wiped so the light shines through.

Through gur sabdee, the Guru's Word, ha-umai goes away. Ha-umai is the pushy "me first" voice. Then the One comes to live in the mind. The verse ends with sahj samaa-ay — soaking in ease. Calm stops being a visitor who comes and goes. It becomes the home you live in.

A Question to Sit With

What helps the noisy, grabbing part of your mind settle down?
