Verse 3 of 5

Why Waste It on Fighting

ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਲਾਗੇ ਨਾਮ ਸੁਆਦਿ ॥
gur parsaad laagay naam su-aad.
By Guru's Grace, I am addicted to the favor of the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਕਾਹੇ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਵਹੁ ਵੈਰਿ ਵਾਦਿ ॥੨॥
kaahay janam gavaavahu vair vaad. ||2||
Why waste your life in hatred, vengeance and conflict? ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

By the Guru's grace, I have come to love the taste of the Naam.

Why waste your life in hatred, getting even, and fighting?

Life is too good to waste on grudges.
The deeper layer

Once you taste the Naam, a life of grudges and fights looks like a waste.

Naam su-aad: the taste, the relish, of the Naam. Vair vaad: hatred and quarrels. Kaahay janam gavaavahu: why waste your life?

Think of a long, sunny afternoon. Nobody wants to spend it sulking in a closet.

A Question to Sit With

Is there a grudge you would feel lighter letting go of?
