Sikhism·Raag Basant·Shabad 25
Verse 4 of 5

When the Puffing-Up Stops

ਗੁਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕੀਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਚੂਕਾ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥
gur kirpaa keenHee chookaa abhimaan.
When the Guru granted His Grace, my egotism was eradicated,
ਸਹਜ ਭਾਇ ਪਾਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ॥੩॥
sahj bhaa-ay paa-i-aa har naam. ||3||
and then, I obtained the Lord's Name with intuitive ease. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When the Guru gave grace, my pride was gone.

Then I found the Naam of the One, easily and naturally.

When the showing-off deflates, the Naam slips in.
The deeper layer

When pride melts away, the Naam comes easily.

Chookaa abhimaan: pride ended. Sahj bhaa-ay: with natural ease. Grace comes first, pride softens, and the Naam comes on its own.

A Question to Sit With

Have you noticed things go better when you stop trying to impress?
