It Does Not Matter Where You Started

tumHraa jan jaat avijaataa har japi-o patit paveechhay.
Your humble servant, whether of high class or low class, O Lord - by meditating on You, the sinner becomes pure.
har kee-o sagal bhavan tay oopar har sobhaa har parabh dinchhay. ||2||
The Lord exalts and elevates him above the whole world, and the Lord God blesses him with the Lord's Glory. ||2||

In plain words

Your servant, O One, may be born high or low. Whoever remembers You, even someone who has fallen, is made pure.

The One lifts that person above the whole world and gives them the One's own glory.

The One lifts up anyone who remembers, wherever they were born.
The deeper layer

Wherever you started, remembering the One makes you pure and lifts you high.

Jaat avijaataa means high class or low class. In Guru Ram Das's time, people were sorted by the family they were born into. This line sweeps that sorting away. Anyone who remembers the One is welcome.

Patit paveechhay — the one the world wrote off is made pure. And the One lifts that person sagal bhavan tay oopar — above the whole world. Think of a new kid picked first for the team by the captain everyone admires. The One's choice outweighs any label others gave you.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever seen someone treated as if they mattered less? How did it feel?
