Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Dear Lord of the World, free me from the poison of ego and of clinging to things as "mine."
The Guru's Sangat is so dear to You. Join the Sangat, and taste how sweet the One is.
Ego and clinging are poison, and the sweetness of the One is tasted among people who remember the One together.
This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Gobind jee-o bikh ha-umai mamtaa munj — dear Lord of the World, set me free from the poison. The poison has two parts. Ha-umai is ego, the feeling of being a separate self. Mamtaa is clinging, holding tight to things and people as if they were yours forever.
The cure is the satsangat, the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One. It is har pi-aaree, dear to the One. There you har ras bhunj, taste the ras, the sweet juice, of the One. Think of setting down a heavy backpack after a long walk, then sitting with friends to share something sweet.
What is one heavy thing you would like to set down so you could feel lighter?
