Verse 3 of 6

When the Words Don't Match the Heart

ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਕਰਹਿ ਵਖਿਆਣ ॥
simrit saastar karahi vakhi-aan.
Some recite and expound on the Simritees and the Shaastras;
ਨਾਦੀ ਬੇਦੀ ਪੜ੍ਹ੍ਹਹਿ ਪੁਰਾਣ ॥
naadee baydee parhHahi puraan.
some sing the Vedas and read the Puraanas;
ਪਾਖੰਡ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਮਨਿ ਕਪਟੁ ਕਮਾਹਿ ॥
pakhand darisat man kapat kamaahi.
but they practice hypocrisy and deception with their eyes and minds.
ਤਿਨ ਕੈ ਰਮਈਆ ਨੇੜਿ ਨਾਹਿ ॥੨॥
tin kai rama-ee-aa nayrh naahi. ||2||
The Lord does not even come near them. ||2||

In plain words

Some recite and explain the Simritees and Shaastras, the old books of rules. Some sing the Vedas and read the Puraanas, the ancient holy songs and stories.

But their eyes put on a show, and their minds are full of tricks.

The One does not even come near them.

When your words and your heart do not match, the show is empty.
The deeper layer

Words can say one thing while the heart holds another.

Some people explain the Simritees and Shaastras, old books of rules and teaching. Some sing the Vedas and read the Puraanas, ancient holy songs and stories. Reading holy books is good. The trouble is pakhand, putting on a show. The verse says they act with man kapat, a mind full of tricks.

Picture someone who says "sorry" with a smile while planning to do the same thing again. The words are right, but the heart is not. tin kai rama-ee-aa nayrh naahi — the One does not come near them. The One is not far away in miles. The distance is the gap between outside and inside. The critique is about faking, whatever book a person reads.

A Question to Sit With

What is the difference between saying something and meaning it with your whole heart?
