Where the Singing Lives

ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਬਸੰਤੁ ਗਨੀ ॥
garihi taa kay basant ganee.
This spring comes only to those homes,
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਧੁਨੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jaa kai keertan har Dhunee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
in which the melody of the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises resounds. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

This spring comes only to those homes where the music of the One's praises rings out.

Where joyful song lives, life stays green.
The deeper layer

Spring lives in a home where people sing the praises of the One.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Garihi taa kay basant ganee — spring counts in that home. Which home? Jaa kai keertan har Dhunee — the one where keertan, songs praising the One, can be heard.

Think of a house on a festival day, full of music and people singing together. You can feel it the moment you walk in. The song is what keeps a place alive and green.

A Question to Sit With

What kind of music or song makes your home feel alive?
