Let Your Love Blossom

ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਮਉਲਿ ਮਨਾ ॥
pareet paarbarahm ma-ul manaa.
O mortal, let your love for the Supreme Lord God blossom forth.
ਗਿਆਨੁ ਕਮਾਈਐ ਪੂਛਿ ਜਨਾਂ ॥
gi-aan kamaa-ee-ai poochh janaaN.
Practice spiritual wisdom, and consult the humble servants of the Lord.
ਸੋ ਤਪਸੀ ਜਿਸੁ ਸਾਧਸੰਗੁ ॥
so tapsee jis saaDhsang.
He alone is an ascetic, who joins the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy.

sad Dhi-aanee jis gureh rang. ||2||
He alone dwells in deep, continual meditation, who loves his Guru. ||2||

In plain words

O mind, let your love for the Highest One burst into bloom.

Grow wise by living what you learn, and by asking the One's humble people.

Whoever joins the Sangat of holy people is the one who lives a true life of hard practice.

Whoever loves the Guru is always deep in meditation.

Love grows best among people who remember the One.
The deeper layer

Love for the One opens like a flower, and it grows best among holy people.

Pareet paarbarahm ma-ul manaa — O mind, let your love for the Highest One blossom. Gi-aan kamaa-ee-ai poochh janaa — earn wisdom by living it, and by asking the One's humble people.

The next line turns an old idea around. A tapsee was someone who left home to live alone, giving up comforts to find the One. Here the true tapsee is the one who joins the saadhsang, the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One. Think of learning to swim. You learn faster in a pool with a good coach and friends than by reading about it alone. And sad dhi-aanee jis gureh rang — the one who loves the Guru is always, quietly, remembering the One.

A Question to Sit With

Who is a good, wise person you learn from just by being around them?
