Sikhism·Raag Basant·Shabad 40
Verse 4 of 5

Steady in the True Place

ਸੇ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਭਉ ਪਇਆ ॥
say nirbha-o jinH bha-o pa-i-aa.
He alone is fearless, who has the Fear of God.
ਸੋ ਸੁਖੀਆ ਜਿਸੁ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਗਇਆ ॥
so sukhee-aa jis bharam ga-i-aa.
He alone is peaceful, whose doubts are dispelled.
ਸੋ ਇਕਾਂਤੀ ਜਿਸੁ ਰਿਦਾ ਥਾਇ ॥
so ikaaNtee jis ridaa thaa-ay.
He alone is a hermit, who heart is steady and stable.
ਸੋਈ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਸਾਚ ਠਾਇ ॥੩॥
so-ee nihchal saach thaa-ay. ||3||
He alone is steady and unmoving, who has found the true place. ||3||

In plain words

Only those who carry awe of the One are fearless.

Only the one whose doubts are gone is at peace.

The true hermit is the one whose heart stays steady in its place.

And the one who has found the true place stands firm and never moves.

A heart full of wonder has no room left for small fears.
The deeper layer

The bravest people are the ones who hold the One in awe.

Say nirbha-o jinH bha-o pa-i-aa — fearless are those who have taken in bha-o. Here bha-o means deep awe and wonder before the One, not being scared. When you are filled with that big wonder, smaller fears lose their grip.

Think of standing at the edge of the ocean. It is so big that your little worries seem to shrink. The verse goes on. Whoever lets go of doubt is at peace. Whoever has a steady heart, ridaa thaa-ay, is the true ikaantee, the true hermit, alone with the One even in a crowd. And whoever has found the true place stands firm, and nothing can knock them off it.

A Question to Sit With

When you feel wonder at something huge, do your smaller worries get quieter?
