The Name Clears the Road

ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਹੋਵਤ ਉਧਾਰ ॥
naam japat hovat uDhaar.
Chanting the Naam, the mortal is saved.
ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਸੁਖ ਸਹਜ ਸਾਰ ॥
naam japat sukh sahj saar.
Chanting the Naam, sublime peace and poise are found.
ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਪਤਿ ਸੋਭਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
naam japat pat sobhaa ho-ay.
Chanting the Naam, honor and glory are received.
ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਬਿਘਨੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥੨॥
naam japat bighan naahee ko-ay. ||2||
Chanting the Naam, no obstacles shall block your way. ||2||

In plain words

Chanting the Naam, you are saved and carried across.

Chanting the Naam, you find deep peace and an easy calm.

Chanting the Naam, honor and a good name come to you.

Chanting the Naam, nothing blocks your way.

Keeping the One in mind quietly clears the road ahead.
The deeper layer

Chanting the Naam carries you across, brings calm and honor, and clears the road ahead.

Naam japat — chanting the Naam — comes four times, like four steps on a stair. Udhaar means being saved, carried across. Sukh sahj saar is the best kind of peace, the kind that comes easily. Pat sobhaa means honor and a good name. Bighan naahee ko-ay — no obstacle stands in the way.

Think of a snowplow going ahead of a car on a winter morning. The road is cleared, and the car moves on.

A Question to Sit With

What is a habit that makes your whole day go more smoothly?
