Verse 3 of 5

Too Big to Figure Out, Close as Your Heartbeat

ਜਾ ਕਉ ਖੋਜਹਿ ਸੁਰਿ ਨਰ ਦੇਵ ॥
jaa ka-o khojeh sur nar dayv.
He is sought by the angels, mortals and divine beings.
ਮੁਨਿ ਜਨ ਸੇਖ ਨ ਲਹਹਿ ਭੇਵ ॥
mun jan saykh na laheh bhayv.
The silent sages, the humble, and the religious teachers do not understand His mystery.
ਜਾ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਕਹੀ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
jaa kee gat mit kahee na jaa-ay.
His state and extent cannot be described.
ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੨॥
ghat ghat ghat ghat rahi-aa samaa-ay. ||2||
In each and every home of each and every heart, He is permeating and pervading. ||2||

In plain words

Angels, people and heavenly beings all search for the One.

Quiet sages, humble people and religious teachers cannot find the One's secret.

No one can say how vast the One is, or how far the One reaches.

And the One fills every heart — each and every heart.

Some things are too big to explain and still close enough to touch.
The deeper layer

Everyone has gone looking for the One. No one can fully figure the One out. And yet the One lives in every heart.

Jaa ka-o khojeh sur nar dayv — angels, people and heavenly beings all search for the One. Mun jan saykh na laheh bhayv — quiet sages, humble folk and religious teachers cannot grasp the bhayv, the secret. That is no failure. The One is simply too big to fit in any mind.

Jaa kee gat mit kahee na jaa-ay — no one can say how vast the One is. It is like trying to scoop up the ocean with a teacup.

But then comes the surprise: ghat ghat ghat ghat rahi-aa samaa-ay. Ghat means a heart, a person. The One fills every single one. Too big to figure out, and as close as your own heartbeat.

A Question to Sit With

What is something too big to fully understand that still feels close to you?
