Sikhism·Raag Basant·Shabad 49
Verse 3 of 5

Kept Safe

ਅਪਣੇ ਜਨ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਆਪਿ ਰਖੇ ॥
apnay jan parabh aap rakhay.
God Himself protects His humble servants.
ਦੁਸਟ ਦੂਤ ਸਭਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਥਕੇ ॥
dusat doot sabh bharam thakay.
The demons and wicked enemies have grown weary of struggling against Him.
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਾਚੇ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਇ ॥
bin gur saachay nahee jaa-ay.
Without the True Guru, there is no place to go.
ਦੁਖੁ ਦੇਸ ਦਿਸੰਤਰਿ ਰਹੇ ਧਾਇ ॥੨॥
dukh days disantar rahay Dhaa-ay. ||2||
Wandering through the lands and foreign countries, people only grow tired and suffer in pain. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The One protects the One's own people.

The cruel and wicked who fight against them grow tired and give up.

Without the True Guru, there is nowhere to go.

People wander through land after land, worn out and hurting.

The One's own people are watched over, even when they cannot see it.
The deeper layer

The One protects the One's own people, and without the Guru you wander and grow tired.

apnay jan prabh aap rakhay — the One protects the One's own; those who would harm them grow weary. bin gur saachay nahee jaa-ay — no solid ground without the Guru.

If someone is being unkind to you or hurting you, that is never something you have to accept. Telling a grown-up you trust is always the right thing to do.

A Question to Sit With

When have you felt watched over or kept safe without quite knowing how?
