Verse 3 of 5

Taken by the Hand

ਕਰਮੁ ਧਰਮੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਕਛੁ ਨ ਬੀਚਾਰਿਓ ॥
karam Dharam mayraa kachh na beechaari-o.
He does not consider the karma of my actions, or my Dharma, my spiritual practice.
ਬਾਹ ਪਕਰਿ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਿਓ ॥੨॥
baah pakar bhavjal nistaari-o. ||2||
Taking me by the arm, He saves me and carries me across the terrifying world-ocean. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The One did not weigh my deeds or my spiritual practice at all.

Taking me by the arm, He carried me across the wide, rough sea of the world.

The best help comes without checking whether you earned it first.
The deeper layer

The One does not wait for us to earn help. The One simply takes our hand and carries us across.

karam Dharam mayraa kachh na beechaari-o — the One did not stop to weigh my deeds or my practice. There was no test to pass first.

baah pakar — taking me by the arm. The One carried me across the bhavjal, the rough water of the world. Think of a lifeguard at a pool. When a child is struggling, the lifeguard does not ask how many swimming lessons they took. They just reach out and pull the child to safety. That is grace, a gift freely given.

A Question to Sit With

Who has taken your hand and helped you across something hard?
