The One Playing Every Side

ਹਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਖੇਲੈ ਆਪੇ ਦੇਖੈ ਹਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਰਚਨੁ ਰਚਾਇਆ ॥

The Lord Himself plays, and He Himself watches; the Lord Himself created the creation.

jan naanak gurmukh jo nar khaylai so jin baajee ghar aa-i-aa. ||4||1||19||
O servant Nanak, that person who plays this game as Gurmukh, wins the game of life, and returns to his true home. ||4||1||19||

In plain words

The One Himself plays, and the One Himself watches. The One Himself made the whole creation.

Nanak says: the person who plays turned toward the Guru wins the game of life and comes home.

Play your part awake, and you get to walk home a winner.
The deeper layer

The One is the maker, the player and the watcher of the whole game.

Har aapay khaylai aapay daykhai — the One plays, and the One watches. Har aapay rachan rachaa-i-aa — the One made the whole world, too. So the One is the player, the watcher, and the maker of the game.

Think of a kid who invents a board game, draws the board, and then plays both colors on a rainy afternoon. Every piece is theirs.

Gurmukh jo nar khaylai — a person who plays as a gurmukh, turned toward the Guru, plays it well. So jin baajee ghar aa-i-aa — that person wins the game and comes home.

A Question to Sit With

What would it mean to play your part in a day wide awake?
