Just Give Me the Name

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਸਰਨਾਇ ॥

Servant Nanak seeks the Sanctuary of the Lord.
ਦੀਜੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਹੈ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਇ ॥੩॥੨॥
deejai naam rahai gun gaa-ay. ||3||2||
Please bestow the blessing of Your Name, that he may continue to sing Your Glorious Praises. ||3||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Nanak, the One's servant, says: I have come to the One's shelter.

Please give me Your Naam, so I can keep on singing Your praises.

Sometimes the only thing worth asking for is the one thing that lasts.
The deeper layer

One gift is worth asking for: the Naam, so you can keep singing the One's goodness.

jan naanak har kee sarnaa-ay — servant Nanak comes to the One's sarnaa-ay, the shelter. Shelter is where you are safe, like coming indoors out of a storm.

Then comes the request. deejai naam — please give me the Naam. He does not ask for money or praise. It is like a child who, asked what they want for their birthday, just says, "Time with you." The Naam is a gift that is given, not earned. With it, Nanak says, he will keep on singing.

A Question to Sit With

If you could ask for just one thing to keep forever, what would it be?
