Clear-Eyed and Free

ਮਾਇਆ ਮਮਤਾ ਤਨ ਤੇ ਭਾਗੀ ਉਪਜਿਓ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥
maa-i-aa mamtaa tan tay bhaagee upji-o nirmal gi-aan.
Attachment to Maya has run away from my body, and immaculate spiritual wisdom has welled up within me.
ਲੋਭ ਮੋਹ ਏਹ ਪਰਸਿ ਨ ਸਾਕੈ ਗਹੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਭਗਵਾਨ ॥੧॥
lobh moh ayh paras na saakai gahee bhagat bhagvaan. ||1||
Greed and attachment cannot even touch me; I have grasped hold of devotional worship of the Lord. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

My clinging to Maya, the pull of the world's things, has run away from me, and a clear, clean understanding has sprung up inside me, fresh as new leaves.

Greed and clinging cannot even touch me now. I have taken hold of loving devotion to the One.

When your hands are full of something good, the grabby feelings can't grab you.
The deeper layer

When love for the One grows, greed loses its grip.

Maa-i-aa means the pull of the world and its things. The tight clinging to it has run away. In its place, upji-o nirmal gi-aan — clear, clean understanding has sprouted up. It grows like fresh green shoots in spring.

Lobh moh ayh paras na saakai — greed and clinging cannot even touch me now. Why? Because I have taken hold of loving the One. Think of holding a friend's hand tightly in a crowd. When your hand is already full, nothing else can grab it.

A Question to Sit With

What good thing could you hold onto so the not-so-good habits lose their grip?
