What makes you think that it is real? ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

This world is only a hill of smoke.

What made you think it was solid and true?

Some things look solid but are only smoke; it is worth telling which is which.
The deeper layer

Much of the world is like a hill of smoke, so learn to tell what lasts from what passes.

Ih jag Dhoo-ay kaa pahaar means this world is a hill of smoke. Think of the smoke from a campfire. From far away it can look like a solid gray hill. Walk into it, and your hand goes right through.

Tai saachaa maani-aa kih bichaar means what made you think it was real? This is not saying life does not matter. It is an invitation to notice the difference. Some things pass like smoke. The True One stays.

A Question to Sit With

What is something that seemed super important once but turned out to be smoke?
