What You Can't Pack

ਧਨੁ ਦਾਰਾ ਸੰਪਤਿ ਗ੍ਰੇਹ ॥
Dhan daaraa sampat garayh.
Wealth, spouse, property and household
ਕਛੁ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਚਾਲੈ ਸਮਝ ਲੇਹ ॥੨॥
kachh sang na chaalai samajh layh. ||2||
- none of them shall go along with you; you must know that this is true! ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Money, husband or wife, all you own, your home —

none of it will go along with you. Understand this well.

Knowing you can't keep things forever is a good reason to love them well right now.
The deeper layer

Money, family and home are dear, and none of them travel on with you.

Dhan daaraa sampat garayh means wealth, spouse, property and house. Kachh sang na chaalai means nothing goes along with you. Samajh layh means understand this.

Think of the last day of a lovely vacation. You cannot pack the beach into your suitcase. Knowing this is not meant to make you sad or afraid. It helps you treasure the people now, and hold your things lightly.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you have right now that you'd like to appreciate more while it is here?
