When Wanting Never Fills

ਕਾਮਨਿ ਚਾਹੈ ਸੁੰਦਰਿ ਭੋਗੁ ॥
kaaman chaahai sundar bhog.
The woman desires beauty and pleasure.
ਪਾਨ ਫੂਲ ਮੀਠੇ ਰਸ ਰੋਗ ॥

But betel leaves, garlands of flowers and sweet tastes lead only to disease.

The more she plays and enjoys, the more she suffers in sorrow.

But when she enters into the Sanctuary of God, whatever she wishes comes to pass. ||5||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The soul-bride wants beauty and pleasure.

But sweet betel leaves, flower garlands and tasty treats only bring sickness.

The more she plays and enjoys, the more sorrow comes.

But when she steps into the shelter of the One, whatever she wishes comes to pass.

Grabbing at treats leaves you emptier; shelter in the One fills you.
The deeper layer

Chasing pleasures leaves you wanting more, and the shelter of the One fills the heart.

The verse pictures someone who wants beauty and treats: sweet leaves, flower garlands, delicious tastes. But too much of these brings sickness. Kheelai bigsai tayto sog — the more they play and delight, the more sorrow follows. Gurbani often pictures the soul as a bride, for every person, man or woman, so this is about any heart that chases pleasure.

Think of eating one piece of candy after another. The first is sweet, but by the tenth you feel sick. Then comes the turn. Parabh sarnaagat — in the shelter of the One, the heart's deepest wish comes true.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever noticed that getting more of something can leave you wanting more, not less?
