Sikhism·Raag Basant·Shabad 64
Verse 7 of 9

An Empty House, A Full One

ਕਾਪੜੁ ਪਹਿਰਸਿ ਅਧਿਕੁ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ॥
kaaparh pahiras aDhik seegaar.
She wears beautiful clothes with all sorts of decorations.
ਮਾਟੀ ਫੂਲੀ ਰੂਪੁ ਬਿਕਾਰੁ ॥
maatee foolee roop bikaar.
But the flowers turn to dust, and her beauty leads her into evil.
ਆਸਾ ਮਨਸਾ ਬਾਂਧੋ ਬਾਰੁ ॥
aasaa mansaa baaNDho baar.
Hope and desire have blocked the doorway.
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਸੂਨਾ ਘਰੁ ਬਾਰੁ ॥੬॥
naam binaa soonaa ghar baar. ||6||
Without the Naam, one's hearth and home are deserted. ||6||

In plain words

The soul-bride puts on fine clothes and piles on decorations.

But the flowers turn to dust, and her looks lead her the wrong way.

Hope and wanting have blocked the doorway.

Without the Naam, the home is empty and bare.

The Naam inside makes a home, whatever decorates the outside.
The deeper layer

The Naam inside, more than any decoration outside, fills a home.

The verse pictures someone dressed in beautiful clothes, covered in decorations. But flowers turn to dust, and beauty alone can lead a person the wrong way. Hope and craving pile up in the doorway until nothing else can get in.

Naam binaa soonaa ghar baar — without the Naam, the home is empty. Think of a house with shiny new furniture, but no one who loves you inside. It looks full, but it feels empty. With the Naam, even a plain room feels like home.

A Question to Sit With

What makes a place feel like home — what is inside it or what is on the outside?
