Buzzing After Everything

ਮਨੁ ਭੂਲਉ ਭਰਮਸਿ ਭਵਰ ਤਾਰ ॥
man bhoola-o bharmas bhavar taar.
The mind, deluded by doubt, buzzes around like a bumble bee.
ਬਿਲ ਬਿਰਥੇ ਚਾਹੈ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਕਾਰ ॥
bil birthay chaahai baho bikaar.
The holes of the body are worthless, if the mind is filled with such great desire for corrupt passions.
ਮੈਗਲ ਜਿਉ ਫਾਸਸਿ ਕਾਮਹਾਰ ॥
maigal ji-o faasas kaamhaar.
It is like the elephant, trapped by its own sexual desire.
ਕੜਿ ਬੰਧਨਿ ਬਾਧਿਓ ਸੀਸ ਮਾਰ ॥੨॥
karh banDhan baaDhi-o sees maar. ||2||
It is caught and held tight by the chains, and beaten on its head. ||2||

In plain words

Fooled by doubt, the mind buzzes around like a bumblebee.

Eyes, ears and mouth are wasted when the mind is full of so many wrong wants.

It is like the elephant, trapped by its own strong desire.

It is caught, held tight in chains, and struck on the head.

Craving can trap even the mighty; a restless want is its own snare.
The deeper layer

Craving makes a mind restless as a bee, and it can trap even something as strong as an elephant.

Two similes for craving: the bee (bhavar) that never settles, and the elephant (maigal) caught by its own desire. Bil birthay: the openings of the body, the senses, go to waste when the mind is full of bad wants. Even great strength comes undone when wanting rules it.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you have wanted so much it was hard to think of anything else?
