Sorrow's Only Company

man mugDhou daadar bhagtiheen.
The mind is like a foolish frog, without devotional worship.
dar bharsat saraapee naam been.
It is cursed and condemned in the Court of the Lord, without the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
taa kai jaat na paatee naam leen.
He has no class or honor, and no one even mentions his name.
sabh dookh sakhaa-ee gunah been. ||3||
That person who lacks virtue - all of his pains and sorrows are his only companions. ||3||

In plain words

The foolish mind is like a frog, with no love for the One in it.

Without the Naam, it is turned away in disgrace at the One's door.

It has no family name or standing, and no one even speaks its name.

Empty of goodness, it has only its pains and sorrows for friends.

Worth comes from the Naam, not from rank; without it we are left with our troubles.
The deeper layer

A mind without the Naam is like a frog in a puddle, missing the garden all around it, with only its troubles for company.

Man mugdhou daadar: the foolish mind is a frog. A frog can sit its whole life in one small puddle and never notice the blossoming garden beside it. Taa kai jaat na paatee: without the Naam, birth and rank count for nothing. Worth comes from holding the One, and that is open to every person.
